Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising thirty-six states and one Federal Capital Territory. The country is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea, a part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south. The capital city is Abuja. The three largest ethnic groups in Nigeria are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
The people of Nigeria have an extensive history, and archaeological evidence shows that human habitation of the area dates back to at least 9000 BC. The Benue-Cross River area is thought to be the original homeland of the Bantu migrants who spread across most of central and southern Africa in waves between the 1st millennium BC and the 2nd CE.

The year 2024 has been filled with remarkable events, not only for us at the Embassy, but also for the citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and for Nigeria-Netherlands relations.
We recall with nostalgia, the visit of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Presidential Visit, which included seven (7) Ministers and other high-ranking officials further consolidated Nigeria-Netherlands relations. In particular, the visit of President Tinubu facilitated enhanced bilateral trade and investment in different sectors. In effect, sector peers and partners from Nigeria and the Netherlands have benefited immensely from the increase in the volume of positive reciprocity in the areas of life sciences and healthcare, horticulture, circular economy, renewable energy, as well as the transmission of intellectual capital.
Invariably, 2024 witnessed significant rise in bilateral trade figures as the Netherlands remains Nigeria’s foremost trade partner-country in Europe.
The Embassy takes this opportunity to celebrate the entire Nigerian community, our social, professional, faith, academic, ethnocultural leaders, our citizens, the government and people of the Netherlands, as well as the private sector for the sustained cooperation. Most importantly, we applaud the efforts of the Umbrella Bodies (UNP, NIDOE-NL, the Youth and Students Groups, Associations, Socio-Cultural and Ethnic Groups) for their unwavering support.
Moving forward, we restate our commitment to making sure that the Embassy remains one to be proud of by all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. The Embassy will redouble its efforts at ensuring effective and efficient service delivery. Additionally, Citizens Diplomacy activities will be intensified as we roll out incremental initiatives. Robust projects and policy advocacies to the private sector and our publics will equally receive greater attention in the New Year. In this regard, the Embassy counts on the continued co-operation of all stakeholders in the year 2025 and beyond.
